STRANGE SLIPS

Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of the strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips. Isaiah 17:10

The book of Isaiah is a treasure house of prophecies and insights into the nature of God, and the things that are to come. In reading through, one will discover that some of what is spoken was for the time of Isaiah; some was prophetic concerning the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ; and much of what is prophesied is for our generation.

The 10th verse caught my attention; "What... are strange slips?"

The following passages include the concordance meanings for the words used. All within brackets are Strong's definitions, to expand our comprehension of what is being stated. The Lord has strongly quickened to me that He is about to Judge His house; that now is the time to prepare. This is merely a sampling of what it is that we need to prepare for.

In Isaiah 17:7 At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel. Because we are so earthbound, we disregard prophetic warnings. Modern man is no different than the people that lived in the days of Isaiah. We too, fail to look to God; we too fail to listen; to believe with our whole heart; to walk in His commandments. And just like the people of old, it will take experiencing God's judgment to open our eyes (understanding) and to cause us to respect and reverence the Almighty.

Isaiah 17:10 Because thou has forgotten [be oblivious of, from want of memory or attention] the God of thy salvation[liberty, deliverance, prosperity, safety], and hast not been mindful [properly to mark, to remember, think on] of the rock [mighty God, refuge, strength] of thy strength [fortified place; defense; stronghold] therefore thou shalt plant [fix; fasten] pleasant plants, and shalt set [plant, bear, conceive seed, sow] it with strange [to turn aside, profane, to commit adultery] slips [a twig, pruned, vine, branch]:

Isaiah 17:11 In that day shalt thou make thy plant [planting] to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed [fruit, plant, posterity, x carnally] to flourish [to break forth as a bud, to bloom, to spread]: but the harvest [severed, that is, harvest (as reaped)] shall be a heap [in the sense of piling up; a mound; a wave] in the day of grief [to be weak, sick, afflicted, be (become) weak, be wounded] and of desperate [frail, feeble, incurable, woeful] sorrow [suffering, adversity: grief, pain, sorrow.]

Isaiah 17:12 Woe to the multitude [a noise, tumult, crowd, company] of many people [as a congregated unit], which make a noise [to make a loud sound, to rage, war, moan, clamor] like the noise of the seas [as breaking in noisy surf]; and to the rushing [uproar, destruction, x horrible] of nations [to gather; a community, people], that make a rushing [to desolate: lay waste] like the rushing [uproar, destruction] of mighty [vast, most, much]

waters! Isaiah 17:13 The nations [to gather, a community; people] shall rush [to desolate: be desolate, (lay) waste] like the rushing [destruction] of many [abundant, plenteous] waters: but God shall rebuke [to chide, corrupt, rebuke, reprove] them, and they shall flee [to flit, that is to vanish away] far off [a distant place, remoteness], and shall be chased [to run after (usually with hostile intent; put to flight, persecute, pursue] as the chaff [as pressed out, winnowed, threshed loose] of the mountains before the wind [by resemblance breath, that is, a sensible or even violent exhalation; by resemblance spirit], and like a rolling thing [a wheel, whirlwind, also dust (as whirled)] before the whirlwind [hurricane, storm, tempest].

Isaiah 17:14 And behold [lo, see] at eveningtide [dusk] trouble [alarm; hence destruction: terror, trouble]; and before [before, ere, not yet] the morning [as break of day] he is not [to be nothing or not exist; a non-entity]. This is the portion [allotment; inheritance, part, portion] of them that spoil [plunder, rob, destroyer] us, and the lot [portion or destiny] of them that rob [to plunder, take for a prey, spoil] us.

This was a lot of words, but the message is very simple. Because we so easily forget our Lord, and the price that he paid for our redemption back to God, we wander off into man made myths and teachings. Yes, we talk about Jesus all the time. But we fail to walk in righteousness. We fail to avail ourselves of the resurrection power that is available to those who believe. We hold a form of godliness but deny the power thereof. When we plant pleasant plants, we are taking our plans; programs; agendas; doctrines; and trying to make them grow and produce fruit.

The significance of this is that there is a monumental difference between what we think is good, and what God desires. We fail to find out what God wants us to do. We give in to the pressures and demands of life, rather than waiting on God for the answer. To plant a strange slip, is to turn aside, to profane, to commit adultery against God. And then we expect Him to bless our efforts? In a nutshell, what we will harvest for all of our efforts is grief and sorrow. We will never see the bountiful harvest that we envision our planting will produce. Anything that is not authored by God, will be no more profitable than dust in the wind. We cannot rubber stamp God's blessing on those things that God does not want for us, just because we want them.

When we are born again, we accept Jesus as our Lord, as well as our Savior. We become members of the household of God. As new members we must learn the rules of the household. God's love for man is beyond our ability to comprehend. What we as a people are seriously lacking today, is a reverence for God. We are so focused on God's love, that we ignore or overlook the other attributes of God. God is Holy; 'no unclean thing can enter His presence.' God is righteous; 'our righteousness are as filthy rags.' God is to be reverenced and feared; 'the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.' We are guilty of abusing grace. We are guilty of seeing how far we can push the limits, before we will see the rod of correction. As a child, I knew that my parents loved me. I also knew that there were rules in our house that must be adhered to. As a youngster I did not break those rules because I knew that I would pay the consequences if I should do so. I feared my father, and knew that love would not enter into the equation when it came to disobedience. I did not do what I knew would bring punishment. Where do we get off behaving like spoiled children, breaking the rules of God's household and thinking we can get away with it because 'God is Love?' "Be ye holy, even as your Father in heaven is holy." We must conform to God's ways. The only thing we will reap for our disobedience is correction.

Isaiah 14:26,27 This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations. For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall dis-annul it? And his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

God has had a plan for all of his creation since before the beginning of time. His plan is perfect and righteous and just. Things are progressing according to His timetable. We would do well to get with the program. There is the planting of the Lord, and there is the planting of strange slips. One is of God and will yield a rich harvest; while the other is of the flesh and will reap a mound of destruction.

Isaiah 5:18-21 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were a cart rope: That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it! Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

Isaiah 9:16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.

These warnings are just as pertinent for us today as any other generation that has gone before us. Our conduct exposes our beliefs. Many are walking in pride, puffed up and confident in all that they have built. This is only possible, because the Presence of God is not in their midst. The time is coming, when the Holy One of Israel will come to their door. "Our God is a consuming fire." Everything that is not of Him is wood, hay and stubble, and will be destroyed at His coming. Are we really grasping the reality of this? It is not some fairy tale. God is coming to receive a church without spot or wrinkle, and He is bringing his reward with Him. If we are walking with God, we will rejoice at His coming; if we are following man, we will be horrified and aghast. God has waited with great patience and long suffering, for a people that would love Him, not the things He can give them. Do not be deceived. Examine the Word, then examine your own heart. We can judge ourselves now, or we can face God's judgment.

There are more false doctrines that have infiltrated the church today than at any other time in history. This is because we are the last generation; the end of the church age is at hand. The world has gone through many age changes down through history, and people have lived right through each change. What is coming is not the end of the world; it is the end of all the (world) systems built by fallen man. People have been taught many things that are not true, to the point that they are filled with fear and do not even want to think about what is coming. We need God's perspective on what He's about to do, so that we can walk through it and come out victorious. Many alive today will see the destruction of all that is corrupt. And even more gloriously we will see the establishment of the Kingdom of God in this world.

There will be no churches in the Kingdom. There will be no denominations, for.... "Every man will know God, from the least to the greatest."Hebrews 8:11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know Me, from the least to the greatest.

Our security, our hope will not be found in the systems of men. It will only be found in our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The enemy has introduced many teachings that are false; the Rapture, Ultimate Reconciliation, Once Saved Always Saved, the Doctrine of Inclusion are just a few.

Such teachings are examples of planting strange slips. Disappointment and sorrow will be the harvest of all who are expectantly waiting for something that God is not the author of. People have accepted these teachings because they appeal to the flesh. Beware of any teaching that contradicts or nullifies what Jesus said. The most overlooked and misconstrued doctrine in the entire Bible is The Gospel of Christ. This is where salvation is to be found.

Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Our relationship with Christ is the only place of refuge and safety. Jesus said he would never leave us or forsake us. He sent the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth. Just talking about Jesus will not change anyone. We must partake of His life, and death, if we would be overcomers. If we compromise the Gospel of Christ, we will feel the rod of correction. Remember this, walking in the Gospel of Christ will humble an individual. The more one comprehends our Lord, the more subservient one becomes. (No flesh shall glory in His presence). These false doctrines (strange slips) will puff up all who receive them, giving them a false sense of superiority over all not yet as 'enlightened' as they are.

We have the choice before us; what will we believe? Who will we follow? Now is the time to decide. What are we planting? What kind of harvest can we look forward to? Now is the time to prepare. Now is the time to let go of everything we are clinging to, and press into a personal relationship with Christ. May we all come to the place where we can rejoice in the privilege of being a servant of the Most High God. May we say from an honest heart,

"Lord, not my will but thine be done."

Amen
