Title. A Psalm. AP. 65. XVII. CPSB (Companion study Bible) XVII, PSALM. (Heb. Mizmor)

This word is used 1n the super-scriptions forty-four times in all (Pss. 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13,15, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 29, 31, 38, 40, 41, 47, 49, 50, 51, 62, 63, 64, 73, 77 , 79, 80, 82, 84, 85, 98, 100, 101, 109, 110, 139, 140, 141, 143. Of these , twenty one are in Book I, seven in Book II, seven in Book III, three in Book IV, and six in Book V.

Mizmor means, and is invariably rendered, "a Psalm", and occurs nowhere but in the Psalm-Titles. It differs from Shir (see below), which is "a Song": i.e. for singing, whereas Mizmor may be for meditation, &c. Mizmor is joined with Shir I thirteen Psalms (30, 65, 67, 68, 75, 76, 87, 92, preceding it; and 48, 66, 83, 88, 108, following it).

Psa 6:1 To the chief Musician on Neginoth upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David. O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

CPSB Note : LORD. Heb. Jehovah (YHVH). Ap. 4. II.

Psa 6:2 Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed.

CPSB Note : Have mercy = be gracious, or show favour to.

Psa 6:3 My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long?

CPSB Note : My soul = I. Heb. nefesh. Ap. 13. Psa. 3. Nefesh is used of man as being mortal, Subject to death of various kinds, from which it can be saved and delivered and life prolonged (soul).

(Rob note: Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

CPSB Note : sore vexed = troubled. Same as John 12. 27, Cp. 42. 5, 6. Joh 12:27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but Joh 12:28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

Joh 12:29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

(Rob note: See the love of the Father, the burden of the impending trial and cross way heavy upon Him so He says aloud "Now is My soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour: (NO)

But (rather) Father, glorify Thy name." In immediate response to His cry, and firm resolve the Father speaks audibly in reassurance, bearing witness to His Son.)

Joh 12:30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. Joh 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

Joh 12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

Joh 12:33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

for this cause came I unto this hour.

Psa 42:5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

Psa 42:6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

CPSB Note : How long = until when? Fig. Erotesis Ap. 6. Erotesis ; or, Interrogating (Gen. 13:9. Psa. 35:10). The asking of questions, not for information, or for an answer. Such questions, may be asked (1) in positive affirmation, (2) negative affirmation, (3) in affirmative negation, (4) in demonstration, (5) in wonder and admiration, (6) in rapture, (7) in wishes, (8) in refusals and denials, (9) in doubts, (10) in admonition, (11) in expostulation, (12) in prohibition or dissuasion, (13) in pity and commiseration, (14) in disparagement, (15) in reproaches, (16) in lamentation, (17) in indignation, (18) in absurdities and Impossibilities, (19) double questions. until when? And, before and after these words, the Fig. Aposiopesis. Ap. 6. Aposiopesis ; or, Sudden Silence. It may be associated with :- 1. Some great promise. (Ex. 32. 32).

2. Anger or threatening. (Gen 3. 22).

3. Grief and complaint. ( Gen. 25. 22. Psa. 6. 3).

4. Inquiry and deprecation. (John 6. 62).

(Rob note: How Long? This question is for meditation, for the whole earth longs for the manifestation of the sons of God. It also speaks to restlessness of the flesh, which is compounded in our day by rush of society to and fro and the constant noise that surrounds us, we are surrounded by taught to expect instant gratification.)

(Rob note cont. ..David was anointed as king by Samuel over 14 years before it became manifest in his life. We would do well to follow his example not touching the Lord's anointed and rather calling out to the Lord for deliverance from our distresses, and resting in His promises. He will fulfill all His word and keep all His promises, in this we must rest. Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.)

Psa 6:4 Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies' sake.

CPSB Note : mercies' = mercy's. Heb. lovingkindess. Psa 6:5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?

CPSB Note: no remembrance. See 30:9; 88:10-12; 115:17; 118:17; Isa. 38:18, 19; Ecc. 9:10.

Psa 30:9 What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?

Psa 88:10 Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.

Psa 88:11 Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?

Psa 88:12 Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

Psa 115:17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.

Psa 118:17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.

Joh 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

Joh 11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Isa 38:18 For the grave cannot praise thee, death can- not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

Isa 38:19 The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.

Ecc 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

the grave. Heb. Sheol. Ap. 35. ( See Companion Bible Ap. 35. Ap. pg. 33, for complete list.) Ap. 35. CPSB pg. 33. "SHEOL". HEBREW, SHEOL.

The first occurrence of the word is in Gen 37. 35, where it is rendered "grave". It occurs sixty-five times in the Hebrew of the Old Testament ; and only by studying each passage by itself can the student hope to to gather the Biblical usage of the word. A heathen or traditional usages are not only worthless, but mischievous.

As meaning "THE grave," it is to be distinguished from keber, a grave, or burying place (from kabar to bury, first occurrence Gen. 23. 4.); and bor, a pit, generally hewn in the rock, hence used of a cistern (Gen. 37.20) or a dungeon. &c., when dry. See not on word "well" in Gen.21. 19. "And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink." CPSB Note : well. Heb. beer, a well (digged): not 'ayin, a spring or fountain; or bor, a cistern (hewn).

Psa 6:6 I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.

(Rob note : Heb 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

Heb 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Oh that He would send the Spirit of prayer and supplication that we would be able travail in intercession and stand in the gap. Often the Gospels record - and he withdrew into the wilderness, or into the mountain to pray.)

Psa 6:7 Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies.

CPSB Note: consumed = wasted. Enemies = adversaries

1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

1Pe 5:9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

(Rob note: And how do we resist, we resist by the WORD, we don't need to look for him, the adversary, but we need not be ignorant of his devices.

Joh 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

Joh 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

Joh 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Joh 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Joh 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

Joh 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Joh 15:8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

Joh 15:9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

Joh 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

Joh 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. Joh 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Joh 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

Joh 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

Joh 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Joh 15:17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

Joh 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

Joh 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

Joh 15:20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

Joh 15:21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

Joh 15:22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.

Joh 15:23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

Joh 15:24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

Joh 15:25 But this cometh to pass that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

Joh 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

Joh 15:27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

Eph 1:2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

Eph 1:5 Having of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, predestinated us unto the adoption}).

Psa 6:8 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping.

CPSB Note: Depart, &c. Fig. Apostrophe. Ap. 6. Apostrophe , When the speaker turns away From his real auditory whom he is addressing to speak to another, who may be:

1. God (Neh. 6. 9).

2. Men (2 Sam. 1. 21, 25).

3. Animals (Joel 2. 22).

4. Inanimate things (Jer. 47. 6).

iniquity. Heb. 'aven. Ap. 44. iii. 'aven, iniquity, specially connected with idolatry. Used because an idol is nothing and vanity, 'Aven is rather a bad course of conduct flowing from the evil desires of fallen nature, than breeches of the Law as such.

Psa 6:9 The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.

Psa 6:9 The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.

CPSB Note: heard...9. receive, Fig. Synonymia. Ap. 6. Syn-o-ny-mi-a; or, Synonymous Words (Prov. 4. 14, 15). The repetition of words similar in sense, but different in sound and origin.

Psa 6:10 Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: let them return and be ashamed suddenly. Pro 3:25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.

Pro 3:26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

1Th 5:1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

1Th 5:2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

1Th 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

Isa 29:5 Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.

Pro 1:24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; Pro 1:25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

Pro 1:26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

Pro 1:27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

Pro 1:28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

Pro 1:29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

Pro 1:30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

Pro 1:31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

Pro 1:32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

Pro 1:33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

(Rob note: There are a multitude of scriptures speaking of the end of the wicked, and the promise of life to the righteous. In this age of technology the only people who believe in the real power of the spiritual world either are simple people from primitive cultures, or who maintain the ties to their cultural roots, or modern people who worship the enemies of Christ. Most Christians have little knowledge of either the Holiness and power of God, and less about the realty of warfare spoken of in scripture. There are many distractions, any of which are sufficient to dull the mind and hearing of men. But God has set a timetable for this earth age, and although we cannot know the day or the hour, there is sufficient information to know the overall time frame.

The testimony of the Word indirectly points roughly a six thousand year time frame for man to be under the Prince and power of the air. Then there is to be a one thousand year millennial reign where Christ rules the nations with absolute authority. This will reveal the contrast of the two rulers. We know from the word that God the Father will shorten the days of wrath and judgment because of His love for His elect. Let us face the coming storms, the days of Jacobs trouble with courage and confidence in the faithfulness and all sufficiency of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, not falling in unbelief as Israel in the wilderness. "Whosoever hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.")
