Psa 8:1 To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
CPSB Note: Thy name: i.e. Jehovah Himself; "name" being put by Fig. Metonomy (of Adjunct), see Ap. 6, for His character, person and attributes. See 20:1 Cp. 5. 11.
Psa. 20:1 The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;
Psa 5:11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.
The earth: i. e. the great subject of this Psalm.
Glory = majesty, or excellence.
Psa 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
CPSB Note: Out of, &c. Quoted in Matt. 21:16.
Mat 21:16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
babes. Referring to His own youth. A still more definite reference to 1 Sam. 17:14, 33, 42, 55, 56.
1Sa 17:14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
1Sa 17:33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
1Sa 17:42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
1Sa 17:55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
1Sa 17:56 And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.
Ordained = appointed. Heb. yasad. Strength. Put by Fig. Metonomy (of Subject) for the praise due for what was put forth by it. Enemies = adversaries. enemy = foe. avenger = the revenger. H5358 nâqam naw-kam' A primitive root; to grudge, that is, avenge or punish: - avenge (-r, self), punish, revenge (self), X surely, take vengeance.
(Goliath of Gath, the champion of the Philistines who sought vengeance against the armies of Israel, His Confidence, was in His great size and strength, the mere sight of him caused the valiant of Israels army to
faint and loose heart. But David, the "stripling" of 1 Sam 17:56, knew the Lord was full of faith).
1Sa 17:26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
1Sa 17:31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
1Sa 17:32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
1Sa 17:33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
1Sa 17:34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
1Sa 17:35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
1Sa 17:36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
1Sa 17:37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
(Davids confidence was not in himself at all, but He had a personal abiding faith in the LORD, and had experienced the favour and deliverance of God. He did not speak from the haughtiness of his heart, but from a clear vision of the majesty of God, and a heart that loved God).
Psa 8:3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
CPSB Note: work. The Western Massorites (Ap. 30), with Sept., and Vulg., read "works" (pl.). fingers.
Fig. Anthropopatheia. Ap. 6. Or Condescension, Attributing to god what belongs to human and rational beings, irrational creatures, or inanimate things. ordained = established. Heb. kun.
Psa 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
CPSB Note. What... ? Fig. Erotesis. Ap. 6. or, Interogating (Gen 13:9; Ps.35:10). The asking of questions, not for information, or for an answer. Quoted in Heb. 2:5-8; Cp.1 Cor. 15:27 and Eph. 1:22.
Heb 2:5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.
Heb 2:6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?
Heb 2:7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
Heb 2:8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
1Co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
1Co 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
1Co 15:27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
1Co 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
(Rob note: Psa. 8. 4. Is Quoted in Heb 2. 5-8, there is no capitalization in Hebrew; son of man v.6 and him v. 7, are clearly in reference to Christ Jesus.
He claimed for Himself the Title the "Son of Man" in His earthly life. Remember the two Adams. The first man Adam, brought death to the entire human race. The second man was made a quickening Spirit).
1Co 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
1Co 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
(The first man was given the governance of all things terrestrial ( life on the earth, including the resources and bounty of the earth).
Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
Eph 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
Eph 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
Eph 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
Eph 2:17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
Eph 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
Eph 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
Eph 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
(The second man shall be given the governance of the heavens. "For to make in Himself of twain one new man , so making peace." Making peace for who, He was already in perfect agreement and unity with the Father, "I and My Father Are One" (John 10:30) and what enmity. The enmity that separates fallen man from a Holy God. This is nothing less than The fathers plan from the foundations of the world. For in Christ Jesus He has reconciled us unto Himself. My friends, He is in Christ Jesus making a new creation, "And they shall be called the sons of God").
1Jn 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1Jn 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Christ Jesus, in perfect oneness with the Father, had all authority with God before this world (age) began, and the man Jesus of Nazareth, was given all authority and is set down at the right hand of God till all His enemies are made His footstool, (Literally are bowed down in submission).
Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Mat 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
Mat 22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
Mat 22:44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
Luk 20:42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Luk 20:43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Act 2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us unto this day.
Act 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
Act 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
Act 2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Act 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
Act 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Act 2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Act 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
(The second man shall be given the governance of the heavens: It has always puzzled me the very idea of ruling and reign-ing with Christ yet here is the testimony of the New Testament in part at least).
1Co 6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
1Co 6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?
(So then we see that all these things Christ endured that we may partakers of the heavenly calling (Heb 3:1), partakers of Christ (Heb. 3:14), partakers of "the Divine Nature" (2 Pet. 1:4), in the face of modern pabulum evangelism which has watered down the WORD of God attempting to make palatable to unregenerated lost man, which is contradiction to the Gospel. There are the words of Jesus Himself, that "if they hated me they will hate you also," several of the texts regarding partakers speak plainly of partaking Of His sufferings. i. e. (2 Cor. 1:7, 1 Pet. 4:13,) and we know that wherever there is suffering it is followed with the promise of Glory. (Rom. 8;18, 2 Co. 1:5, 6, 7; Phil 3;10; Col. 1:24; Heb. 2:10; 1 Pet 1:11; 1 Pet. 5:1)
Partakers of the "Heavenly calling."
Heb 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Partakers "of Christ."
Heb 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
Partakers of the "Divine nature."
1Pe 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
2Co 1:7 And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.
Pe 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
1Pe 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
1Pe 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
(there may be glory without suffering, but whenever He speaks of the suffering of His own it accompanied with the promise of glory. Does not the scripture say that He endured the cross, despising the shame for the joy that was set before Him. (Heb 12:2). What was the joy set before Him? Was it possibly seeing us freed from the curse of the law of sin and death, washed and made pure, and restored into right relationship with the Father? The church of today desperately needs to know their God, not as they would have Him be, but as He has revealed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ and the full counsel of the WORD. No one would question that the Revelation is about the end of the age, but between the Old Testament prophets and the words of Christ, and the Revelation the day of the LORD is going to try all flesh. And if you think you are above that you are placing yourself above all the suffering Saints of history and more importantly above Christ Himself. The Gospel does not promise Health Wealth and Prosperity, it promises divers trials and afflictions. It promises, the comfort of the Holy Spirit, and the grace to overcome the world. It promises deliverance from the second death, and an eternal dwelling in the very presence of God. This is the power of the Gospel, no longer in bondage to fear of death. If you question this I encourage you to read "foxes book of martyrs" and its testimony to the faithfulness in God and His Presence in the lives of His people at the darkest hours they sang, and were filled with joy, and when they spoke it is reminiscent of the testimony of Stephens witness in Acts).
Psa 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
CPSB Note: man = mortal man. Heb Enosh. Ap. 14. 3. Enosh, First occurrence Gen. 6. 4, men of name. Always in a bad sense (Isa. 5:22; 45:14; Judg. 18:25). Morally = depraved, and physically = frail, weak. It is from 'anash, to be sick, wretched, weak, and denotes inability, for strength, physically; and for good, morally (Cp. 2 Sam. 12:15; Job 34:6; Jer. 15:18; 17:9; 30:12, 15. Mic. 1:9). Note the contrasts, Isa. 2:11 and 17, "The lofty looks of man ('Adam) shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men ('Enosh) shall be bowed down" mindful... visitest. Fig. Anabasis. Ap. 6. Or, Gradual Ascent (Psa. 18:37, 38) An increase of emphasis or sense in successive sentences. the son of man.
Psa 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
CPSB Note: the son of man. No Article. Occurs three times before this (Num. 23:19. Job. 25:6; 35:8). In sing. 111 times in O.T. and 39 times in pl. (the other occurrences in the Psalms (49:2; 144:30 is a different word). Here (8. 4) the title relates to dominion in the earth. Cp. vv. 1, 6-9, And see notes on Ezek. 2:1, Matt. 8:20, and Rev. 14:4.
Psa 8:1 To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
Psa 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
Psa 8:7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
Psa 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
Psa 8:9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
Eze 2:1 And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.
CPSB Note: Son of man = son of Adam. Heb. ben 'adam. Ap. 14. I. used of Ezekiel (exactly 100 times) by Jehovah, always without the Article. In N.T. used by Christ (of Himself) eighty six times in A.V. (eighty-three times in the R.V., omitting Matt. 18:11; 25:13, Luke 9:56). Always with the Article in N.T.
See notes on Psa. 8:4, Matt. 8:20, and Rev. 14:14. Without the Article it denotes a human being, a natural Descendant of Adam. In Ezekiel it is used in contrast with the celestial living creatures (ch. 1). With the Article 9AS USED OF Christ) it denotes "the second man," which "the first man" had forfeited, and succeeding, therefore, to the universal dominion over the earth which had been committed to Adam (Gen 1 .26, Psa. 8.4-8). In the N.T., outside the four Gospels, it is used only in Acts 7:56; Heb. 2:6; Rev. 1:17.
Reminding us that he was not a false prophet, or self called- and sent. Such spake out "of their own heart" (13:2, 3). Cp. Jer. 23:16. Note: Matt 8:20 the Son of man. He who has dominion in the earth.
Note: Rev. 14:14. Last occurrence of this title.
Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
(Rob note: As the creative hand of God, Christ had full claim to the dominion of the earth, and he exercised this on several occasion in His earthly ministry, when he came walking on the stormy seas, when He slept in perfect peace while the storm raged, and the seasoned fisherman, who had no doubt survived the sudden fierce storms of sea of Galilee, feared for their very lives and cried lord "We perish" and rose up and with a word stilled the storm. R.C. Sproul, in a message on the Holiness of God, spoke of the raging seas instantly becoming dead calm, and the raging winds "not even a zephyr" of a breeze. As he demonstrated this speaks of the otherness of Christ, as fully man and fully God. And the disciples were filled with dread, "what manner of man is this that the wind and the waves obey Him." When Satan in the temptation in the wilderness said all these kingdoms I will give to you if you but bow down and worship me. But our Lord would have none of the self aggrandizement of the flesh, neither did He argue. "For the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof," rather He remained humble and took refuge in the written WORD, "It is written." Christ learned obedience through the things that He suffered, not His Divine nature but the natural man. And HE IS our example. There is a beautiful picture presented, in His peaceful sleep amidst a terrible storm. He knew His life was in the fathers hands, that nothing could touch Him until the fullness of His time. At least twice the people had sought to harm Him and he passed through their midst. We also can have this complete confidence in the Sovereignty of God, trusting that He will turn all things to our good if we but rest in His Word).
Psa 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
CPSB Note: the angels. Heb. Elohim. See Ap. 4. I. Rendered "angels" in Heb. 2:7; also here, in Sept., Vulg., Syr., and Arab. See also Psa. 97:7; Heb. 1:6.
Psa 97:7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.
Heb 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
Crowned, &c. This refers to the "second man". See note on Heb. 2:8, and 2 Pet. 1:17.
Heb 1:7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
Heb 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom.
Heb 1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
Heb 1:10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
Heb 1:11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;
Heb 1:12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
Heb 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
CSB Note: unto. Gr. Pros, as v. 7. G4314 pros
A strengthened form of G4253; a preposition of direction; forward to, that is, toward (with the genitive case the side of, that is, pertaining to; with the dative case by the side of, that is, near to; usually with the accusative case the place, time, occasion, or respect, which is the destination of the relation, that is, whither or for which it is predicated): - about, according to, against, among, at, because of, before, between, ([where-]) by, for, X at thy house, in, for intent, nigh unto, of, which pertain to, that, to (the end that), + together, to ([you]) -ward, unto, with (-in). In compounds it denotes essentially the same applications, namely, motion towards, accession to, or nearness at.
G4253 pro
A primary preposition; "fore," that is, in front of, prior (figuratively superior) to. In compounds it retains the same significations: - above, ago, before, or ever. In compounds it retains the same significations.
(Rob note: pros. Unto, speaks of the Favour of Jehovah (YHVH), and the preference and deference of the Godhead, complete agreement and unity. We will fulfill our destiny in relation to our coming into agreement with God, deferring to His counsel in all things, standing not in our own strength but resting in His all sufficiency. We would do well to stop looking at ourselves and fix our eyes on Christ Jesus Who is the Author and Finisher of our faith).
Psa 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
CPSB Note: him: i.e. the "first man," Adam (Gen. 1:26)
Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
dominion , &c. This he lost in the Fall. works. Some codices, with three early printed editions and Syr., read "work" (sing.) hands. Fig. Anthropopatheia. Ap. 6. Or, Condescension , ascribing to God what belong to human and rational beings, irrational creatures, and inanimate things.
hast = didst (Gen 1 26). all things. Six are enumerated in vv.7 and 8. (the number of man)
Psa 8:7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
Psa 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
(Rob note: I recently watched a documentary about the "Living Sea" and it followed the migratory patterns of many sea creatures. It told a large dead space in the open sea that has very little life in it.
It revealed that there are rivers that actually flow through the seas (and Oceans), it unknowingly gave glory to God the Creator for the intricate balance and design as these rivers are in effect the super-highways of the seas, bring life and provision to all the creature of the deep. Men have long known that there are prevailing currents that can enhance or impede shipping (more true of the past sailing ships).
And here in the Psalms 3000 years ago, David speaks about the "paths of the seas," and how so, because the Lord is the Creator, and David is speaking from the Holy Spirit of God, Who never speaks of Himself but bears witness to the Father and the Son).
Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
CPSB Note: the Spirit of God moved (see Ap. 9) = the beginning of "the heavens and earth which are now" (2 Pet. 3:7).
2Pe 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
2Pe 3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
2Pe 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
CPSB Note, cont. from Gen 1:2. It is even so of the New Creation. The Spirit moves (John 3:3-8).
Rom. 8:5, 9, 14; Gal 4:29; 2 Cor. 5:17, 18).
Joh 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Joh 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
Joh 3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Gal 4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2Co 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
Psa 8:9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
To the Chief Musician upon Muth-labben.
CPSB Note: To the Chief Musician. See Ap. 64. upon Muth-labben. Heb. Lammenazzeh
1. That whatever the interpretation or application of the words may be, Psalm which had this word in the sub-scription has a use beyond its local, temporary, or original purpose; and, being considered for public use, or for special occasions, was handed over to the director of the Temple worship with any instructions which might be necessary for its use.
2. That such word or words of instruction, which today stand in the Septuagint and all subsequent versions of the Bible as the super-scription, belong, not to that Psalm, but to the sub-scription of the Psalm preceding it.
This, at one stroke, removes the great difficulty, and solves the heretofore insoluble problem and impossible task which all commentators have experienced, when they struggled to find in one Psalm the explanation of words which belong to another. (Partial quote of Ap. 64).
(Rob note: Spiritualized "the Chief Musician is Christ" This is not such a far stretch as among His titles is "Chief Shepherd," and the Entire WORD of God is about Him).
Upon muth-labben = Relating to the death of the Champion (Goliath) Cp. 1 Sam. 17:4,46, &c. Ps 144. Which has, in the Sept., the title "A Psalm of David concerning Goliath."
1Sa 17:4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
CPSB Note: champion. Heb. ish-habbenayim = "the man between two [hosts]," or, the duelist. This accords the with the sub-scription of Psalm 8 (see note there). Muth-labben = the death of the man between; i.e. the death of the champion (Goliath) which Psalm 8 celebrates. Psa. 144, which has the same words, "What is man," has for its title in Sept. "A Psalm of David concerning Goliath."
Six. Note the number "6" stamped like a hallmark on this "man" (as on Nebuchadnezzer, Dan.3). Cp. six pieces of armor, vv. 5- 7.
1Sa 17:5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
1Sa 17:6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
1Sa 17:7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
1. Helmet of brass
2. A coat of mail
3. Greaves of brass
4. A target of brass
5. His spear (like a weavers beam, with head weighing six hundred shekels of iron) a weapon of both offense and defense.
6. A shield (Heb. Zinnah a shield of the largest size). It required another man to carry it before him.
Ap. 10. THE SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF NUMBERS. SIX. Denotes the human number. Man was created on the sixth day; and this first occurrence of the number make it (and all multiples of it) the hall mark of all connected with man. He works six days. The hours of his day are a multiple of 6. Athaliah usurped the throne of Judah six years. The great men who have stood out in defiance of God (Goliath and Nebuchadnezzer and Antichrist) are all emphatically marked by this number.
[Rob note: This is a clear picture for us to examine, Goliath of Gath was a descendent of the Nephilim, which according to the Genesis account were the result of the union of the sons of God and mortal women. They're fathers are spoken of in Jude 6. And in the book of Enoch.
The Nephilim became men of renown. They were mighty and devoted to the flesh. [CPSB Ap. 25. The Nephilim or Giants of gen. 6. The progeny of the fallen angels with the daughters of Adam are called in Gen 6, Ne-phil-im,
Which means fallen ones (from naphal, to fall). What these beings were can only be gathered from Scripture. They were evidently great in size and wickedness. They were superhuman, abnormal beings].
Gen 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
(Rob note: what is remarkable to me is the picture here of complete confidence in the flesh, it never entered into the heart and mind of Goliath that this "stripling of a boy" could ever defeat him. And this is the very nature of pride and self-deception. Goliath as we have seen is an extreme example and the record of Scripture is for our benefit. There is coming the revelation of the man of sin, according to the Word this will occur before the return of Christ, but his confidence will not save him, his doom is sure. We are to be as David was strong and courageous, trusting not in the arm of the flesh but in the strong arm of the LORD and in the power of his might. For He has promised to save to uttermost them who come to Him for Salvation.
Dan 11:32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
Dan 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
Mat 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Mat 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
Heb 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
Heb 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
Heb 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
